Word of mouth research: Social media is now mainstream

Global participation in social media is at an all-time high according to the Universal Mccann International Social Media Research Wave 3 report. The 2008 study covers 17,000 internet users in 29 countries.

Beginning with the first report in 2006, the study shows how social media has grown to the point where many forms of social media are now mainstream activities for global internet users, including reading blogs which is now something 77% of users do—up 11% from a year ago.

The report also includes some impressive raw numbers on global internet users, including:

  • 346 million blog readers
  • 307 million visit social network pages
  • 272 million manage a profile in a social networking site
  • 184 million write blogs
