1:30 — Evette Tan introduces Greg Link, author of Smart Trust: Creating Prosperity, Energy, and Joy in a Low-Trust World.
1:31 — On establishing trust: “Trust is a skill” – You can actually learn it. You can get better at it. People can understand it inherently, but you can build on it, frame it and get better at it.
1:35 — “They key of social media is being authentic.” We have a tendency to judge ourselves by our intentions, but we judge others by behavior. You trust people because they are honest and confident.
1:39 — How do you restore trust? “It’s all about managing your expectations with people. Do what you say you are going to do. Make a promise and keep it. That is the fastest way to restore trust.“
1:41 — If you have a good reputation online, people reach out and connect with you. They will trust you.
1:43 — Link’s ending note and key talking point: “Trust is a career skill.” In a low trust world, anyone who can establish brand trust will have a leg-up in creating a great industry.
1:44 — Q&A
If a company has already a high level of trust and an incident happens that lowers trust (cites her career at an energy company), how do you regain it?
Acknowledge the situation and tell the truth about it. “Decide what you can promise and perform on it.” In the meantime you can also use social media to report small wins and positive things about your company
If you have an untrustworthy employee, how does it permeate throughout a company and what can you do to re-establish trust?
Be explicit and hold them accountable. You may also consider eliminating them from the team.
A great session from author, Greg Link. His energy and passion for authenticity has certainly resonated though the room. We are all finishing up lunch now. The chocolate covered bananas were a total win.
