Word of Mouth Tip #29: Help people help a friend

People love to help and support those they care about — it’s one of the driving fundamentals behind word of mouth.

When you make an honest effort to help people help others, you earn a little spot in that relationship. You become an important link that everyone benefits from.

How a word of mouth supergenius does it:

Intuit’s Love a Local Business competition lets fans, customers, vendors, employees, and the community nominate great businesses that deserve some love.

Fans nominate businesses by writing short notes on why they love them and what they mean to the local community. Customers can also use this database of nominees to find new businesses to try.

Monthly grand prize winners receive $25,000 worth of local radio advertising, $9,500 in cash, and a bunch of free products and services from Intuit.

The way the project is set up, it’s so much more than, “Enter our contest!” — it’s, “Help a deserving business get some well-deserved love and attention.”

Disclosure: Intuit is a Social Media Business Council member (and an awesome one at that!), but even if they weren’t, we’d write about them anyway.
