Word of Mouth Tip #22: Have a special welcome for the friends that fans send to you

When a fan sends one of their friends to check you out, that friend is different than a stranger. They’re more open to what you have to say and they’re much more likely to try a sample, make a purchase, or subscribe to your newsletter.

Do something extra to welcome these referred customers. Make them feel like a special guest — like they’re already part of the family.

How a word of mouth supergenius does it:

Hugh MacLeod sends out a fantastic daily cartoon through his “Hugh’s Daily Cartoon” newsletter.

Hugh’s work is popular and often forwarded — lots of people tell their friends to sign up for his newsletter. So he created a simple, special landing page to welcome them. It reads:

Hello!

One of your friends sent you the link to this page, and so here you are. Welcome!

My name is Hugh. I’m  a cartoonist. I have a newsletter, “Hugh’s Daily Cartoon”, which I send out five mornings a week (Sign up below). A wee chuckle in your inbox, to start your day off on the right foot (so to speak).

Actually, it’s a little bit more than that. I try to make cartoons that provoke, make people think, make people feel motivated. Carpe diem etc.

Anyway, it seems your friend wanted to turn you onto all this, so I hope you will subscribe.

P.S. Check out the special artwork Hugh did for our conference.
