Want to learn how to get people talking? Try taking a few tips from the folks who are doing it every day on shoestring budgets: nonprofits. What to do:

1> Give them a job
2> Give them something to show off
3> Give them a purpose

1> Give them a job

Walk into any well-organized nonprofit offering to volunteer and they’ll put you to work. You should strive to be that efficient when you’ve got fans willing to help out. Create volunteer opportunities, set aside tasks for them, and always have a job ready when a fan shows up and wants to help.

2> Give them something to show off

Charitable organizations are great at making it easy for their supporters to show them off. With the (RED) project, just the color of your cell phone or laptop can start conversations. And it’s amazing how much a plastic yellow wristband has done to fight cancer.

3> Give them a purpose

Nonprofits exist because there’s something worth fighting for. Great word of mouth programs are founded on similar beliefs. Tap into the passion of your talkers by standing for something, righting a wrong, and giving them a higher purpose for talking about you.
