Word of mouth tools are often that extra push to get someone to talk about you. They’re a reminder, a conversation starter, and a physical object to share. And best of all, they’re easy to create.
Here are three examples of word of mouth tools that don’t make you try too hard:
1. Signed documents
2. Temporary tattoos
3. Koozies
1. Signed documents
If you order the XXX Wings at Jake Melnick’s Corner Tap, they’ll make you sign a waiver first. It’s mostly a joke, but it’s also bragging rights for whoever eats them. And not just bragging rights like, “I ate the hottest wings” but bragging rights like, “I ate wings so hot, they made me sign a waiver.” (And that’s what we call a portable word of mouth message.) In fact, many people take a picture of the waiver to show it to their friends. Give your customers something concrete to brag about. It can be as simple as making them sign a piece of paper.
2. Temporary tattoos
You’ve already heard of Coca-Cola’s cans with people’s names on them in place of their logo. But in their Latin American markets, they put a little spin on the campaign by printing common last names and including a temporary tattoo. That’s a conversation starter their customers will be wearing on their bodies all day. But you don’t have to be Coke to do it. For example, companies like Tattly help small businesses make well-designed temporary tattoos people will actually wear.
3. Koozies
Mexicali, a Mexican beer brand, sticks a branded koozie onto one beer can in each of their six-packs. On the shelf, it’s a tactic that catches your eye. Then, it’s a word of mouth tool that sticks around long after the six pack is gone. How are you throwing in a conversation starter with every package of your stuff?
