IKEA stores do a great job of helping customers visualize what IKEA furniture could look like in their house. Dog shelters, however, have a harder time helping people imagine what it would be like to have a dog in their home.

Let’s be honest. Most dog shelters aren’t very homey.

So to get people thinking about adoption, the Arizona Humane Society partnered with IKEA to put life-sized cardboard cutouts of their adoptable dogs in IKEA showrooms.

Just like IKEA’s furniture, the dog photos were placed as if they belonged there with tags describing where the customers could go to meet and adopt them.

WOM Tip: IKEA loves dogs

Lots of people took pictures with the dogs, scanned the QR codes on the tags, and liked the shelter on Facebook. That’s great word of mouth for both IKEA and the Arizona Humane Society.

In fact, the campaign was so successful that they’re extending it to even more furniture companies in Arizona.
