One of the biggest additions to the new edition of the best-selling book, Word of Mouth Marketing: How Smart Companies Get People Talking, is the five new case studies of brilliant word of mouth marketing from Dell, Potbelly, FreshBooks, Microsoft, and Levenger. Next week we’ll go into more detail on the specific examples, but here’s what you have to look forward to:
Dell: As one of the first companies to get called out for not listening to its word of mouth, Dell has become one of the first to learn how to do it the right way. In this case study, you’ll see why the company is known for its pioneering initiative in finding new ways to participate and connect with talkers — and how respect for the company has increased directly as a result.
Potbelly: As a Chicago-based restaurant chain just starting to go national, Potbelly is taking advantage of word of mouth by encouraging their fans in different cities to talk about them. Using mostly offline tactics, Potbelly shows us how some simple techniques can create fantastic word of mouth.
FreshBooks: One of the great truths of word of mouth marketing is that you never know which talkers and which topics will kick off a major conversation. This case study covers how FreshBooks and their head of magic, Saul Colt, tried every topic they could find.
Microsoft: Since long before blogs and social media, Microsoft’s MVP program has been successfully reaching out to their talkers and making them feel fantastic. This case study outlines how easy it is and how anyone (on any budget) could do something similar.
Levenger: The best person to be your social media evangelist may not be someone from the marketing or communications team. In this example, you’ll see where Levenger found theirs (and where you can look to find yours).
