Last year, the PGA Tour’s Phoenix Open lived up to its name as “The Greenest Show on Grass.” It was the first sporting event of its kind to have zero waste. As the event’s sponsor, Waste Management brought in advanced facilities that made sure everything was recycled, reused, or composted — even discarded liquid from the events’ vendors was reclaimed for grey water purposes.
That’s some pretty remarkable stuff. But to get people talking about it outside of the event, Waste Management Senior Manager of Social Media April Sonsona explains, they did a lot of legwork in social media. In her presentation at SocialMedia.org’s Member Meeting, April shares how they got influencers to talk about them, brought sustainability experts in on the conversation, and earned some raving fans.
She also talks about:
- Why one Instagram contest winner came back to volunteer at a Zero Waste Station
- How a children’s book author became one of their biggest talkers
- Why they held an “event within an event” during the WM Phoenix Open
