The first chapter of “The Social Media Side Door” by Ian Greenleigh

Greenleigh Chapter 1It wasn’t always hard to reach people by telephone or through email. According to Ian Greenleigh, Senior Manager of Content and Social Strategy at Bazaarvoice, these communication modes used to be like social media is now: free of gatekeepers.

In The Social Media Side Door, Ian explains how gatekeepers control messages (whether you’re trying to call an executive at a big company or get a story in the news). But, Ian says, if you know how to use it, social media can help you get around these traditional barriers to getting your message out there.

In this free download of the first chapter, Ian talks about why more people are blogging, sharing content, and becoming their own “media companies,” to create the side doors to publicity. To do it, he gives some tips for creating content and blogging. Here are a few from this chapter:

  • Show your expertise, don’t tell.
  • Define your niche.
  • Show off what people say about you.
  • “The Golden Rule” applies to blogging, too.
