Word of Mouth Tip #60: Give old fans a new reason to talk

All word of mouth conversations need a trigger – something to start the conversation.

For your new fans, everything is different and exciting, so they’re surrounded by triggers. But as the newness quickly fades, you need to mix in remarkable moments to give the old-school folks something new to share.

By the time you hit your 1,000th check-in on Foursquare, for example, you pretty much know all there is to know about the app – and you’ve probably told all the friends you care to tell about it. But Foursquare takes advantage of the occasion by sending you a new badge of achievement and a coupon code worth 40% off anything in their online store.

It’s a great new reason to talk (their badges always start conversations), and the coupon code sends these longtime fans to the store where they can get Foursquare gear – stuff that will help them start a whole new series of conversations.

What about you? What milestone can you help your long-time fans and customers celebrate?
