When you’re selling a solution, it’s easy to focus too much on the problem. Commercials for scented trash bags and air fresheners, for example, usually make you cringe by focusing on all of the nasty smells you need to cover up.

But what if they did something to make their customers smile instead of cringe? Making people smile when they least expect it is always a great word of mouth strategy. And that’s exactly what Tuffy did when they promoted their scented trash liners.

They decorated a garbage truck to look like an ice cream truck, complete with music, a giant ice cream scoop on top, and a sweet scent trailing behind.

When’s the last time people stopped and smiled at a passing garbage truck? The more unexpectedly you brighten someone’s day, the more likely they are to talk about it.
