Video: How to get people talking offline

Geno Church of Brains on Fire shares classic, offline word of mouth techniques to earn fans and get them talking.

Social media may be sexy, but the majority of word of mouth conversations are happening offline.

In this video, legendary word of mouth marketer Geno Church of Brains on Fire shares the fundamentals of what it takes to create real-world conversations. The big idea behind his presentation? Start by asking “why” people will share something (long before you ask the how’s or what’s).

In the presentation, you’re also going to learn:

  • How a small Mini dealership found a salesperson that creates advocates
  • Why social tools aren’t enough to create genuine word of mouth
  • How excitement and emotions drive conversations offline
  • Examples of fantastic offline communities

Fantastic discussion about people – loving people, talking to people, and being people. Power to the people! I’ve always believed Social Media was an anthropological adventure but I can’t recall anyone acknowledging that belief.

I’ve been coaching representatives in the Direct Selling space on how they can use Social Media to build their businesses. They’re always surprised to hear that WOM online isn’t about the technology but about the people they’re talking to. They’re equally surprised to hear their business framed as the original “social selling” business model, and relieved when I point out that every living room mirrors modern social networks like Facebook. Conversely, Facebook can be the biggest “Hostess Party” they’ve ever booked — that’s the A-ha moment that changes everything.

It’s such a huge challenge for these small businesses to launch Facebook pages and build solid followings without the genuine interest of the fans they meet offline, so this space is truly a reflection of how both worlds thrive when working together and diminish possibilities when operating from an either/or perspective. Thanks again for a fun discussion.
