Whether you play with paint or guitars or life insurance — great art deserves great word of mouth. Here are 3 steps to improve your WOM:

1> Be where your talkers are
2> Get the fans involved
3> Give big fans something special

1> Be where your talkers are

Somewhere, right now, you’ve got fans talking about you. Building your own community is great, but you’ll often have much more success if you meet them where they already are. If they’ve got a big presence on Facebook, you should be there — the same goes for Twitter, MySpace, YouTube, forums, etc.

2> Get the fans involved

Give fans the opportunity to be a part of the art and music they love. Bands could do it by letting fans design their T-shirts or pick their set list, while painters and photographers could get fans involved by accepting ideas on little-known places worth photographing or showing off the work of their fans that they inspired. Getting your fans involved means giving them a little piece of ownership in your success — this is a good thing.

3> Give big fans something special

Help your biggest fans feel like insiders by giving them something extra special. Give them the backstage passes, host a pancake breakfast just for them, and give them access to lots of behind-the-scenes stuff. If you arm your biggest talkers with free passes and access to insider events, they’ll have much more success in getting their friends to check you out.
