Issue #148: Word of mouth for your coupons

[Welcome back to the You Can Be a Word of Mouth Marketing Supergenius! newsletter. This is text of the great issue all of our email subscribers just received. Sign yourself up using the handy form on the right.]

Discounts and coupons are classic conversation starters, but with a few tweaks, you can make them into some real drivers for your word of mouth. Here are a few ideas to help them spread:

1> Give them away in multiples
2> Have a minimum
3> Put them in an email

1> Give them away in multiples

Never give away single coupons to just one customer. Lone coupons are used quietly by a single person — there’s no need to get a friend involved. But if you give away multiple coupons (especially ones that expire on the same day), people are sure to be walking around the office handing them out.

2> Have a minimum

Get everyone recruiting friends for your discount by having a minimum number of participants required to activate it. Instead of the generic 10 percent off for each coupon, make it a significant discount that only works if they bring in three friends. Not only will you get more people in the store for your sale, but you’ll create a bunch of behind-the-scenes word of mouth from all the recruiting everyone will be doing.

3> Put them in an email

Help your coupons spread by putting them in an email. You don’t need to have the whole world on an email list — rather, just send your opt-in subscribers a little discount now and then and let them pass it on to their friends. Not only will it make it easier to spread your coupon, but it’ll also be a nice little inside perk for your email subscribers.
