Issue #134: Word of mouth from giveaways

The freebie, giveaway, or discount can be excellent conversation starters, but to get them really spreading, try a couple of these simple tweaks:

1> Insider discounts
2> Multi-pack freebies
3> Lots of samples

1> Insider discounts

Make your fans feel special and get them talking with insider discounts. Specials like friends-and-family discounts or a deal allowing members to get their friends a better price will lead to a bunch of customers dragging in their friends just to show off their status. Not only will this lead to fantastic word of mouth but it’ll also be directly reflected in the bottom line with all the new customers coming through the door.

2> Multi-pack freebies

Instead of giving away a single freebie, give away enough that ensures your customers will pass them out. A dentist could give out a bunch of toothbrushes instead of just one, or a restaurant could send home enough dessert that a person could share it with their office. If you’re already giving away the gift, give enough for a friend to share.

3> Lots of coupons

If you’re offering coupons, give them away in multiples. A single coupon means they’ll use it, but a book full of identical coupons means they’ll share it with others. And to get a little boost in WOM, try having them expire on the same day and watch as your customers bring in a bunch of friends.
