Issue #108: Super-Simple Evangelism Program

Create a word of mouth buzz program in 5 simple steps:
1> Find your talkers
2> Create a way to communicate
3> Give them something to talk about
4> Make it easy
5> Thank them publicly

1> Find your talkers

You already have plenty of talkers (evangelists, fans, friends,
recommenders, influencers).  You just need to go out there and find
them.  Surf the blogs, social networks, and product reviews. When
someone says something nice, email them and ask if they’d like to join
the fan club. They’ll be thrilled to hear from you. Also, put a form
on your web site, and a clipboard next to the cash register, where
people can sign up.

2> Create a way to communicate

These fans won’t be much help if you don’t have a way to talk to them.
Create an email newsletter, blog, forum, or community. Don’t make it
fancy, just use one of the many free/cheap sites out there. If a bunch
of people use it, then invest in something more substantial.

3> Give them something to talk about

Your fans need a word of mouth topic — something new that they can
tell their friends about. Have a sale, a secret discount, a special
new product, a seminar, a fun event… anything. Try a lot of simple
topics until one gets people excited.

4> Make it easy

Put your message in a ready-to-forward email and give them simple text
that they can paste right into their blogs. Include a graphic in
various sizes, with clear instructions where to link it. Be sure to
create a good tell-a-friend form right next to each announcement.  The
easier you make it to share, the more they will share it.

5> Thank them publicly

People want to be appreciated, especially by companies that they love.
Every time you see someone talking about you, be sure to thank them.
Send a personal message, but also create a public web page. It’s a
nice thing to do — and the more you thank people, the more likely
they are to talk again.
