How Beck is feeding music fans fresh stuff to share (and increasing web traffic by 500 percent)

Instead of releasing a new album in one big splash, singer-songwriter Beck is dripping out a bunch of free covers online as part of his new “Record Club” project — beginning with a reinterpretation of classic rock band The Velvet Underground‘s 1967 debut album.

Collaborating with about eight friends and musicians, Beck recorded the songs in one day with minimal rehearsal time and releases a new track on his website each week. The project is the first installment of what Beck says will include at least two more albums.

The word of mouth value?

Beck has given his followers a reason to regularly check out his site, and the fresh tracks are helpful tools fans can use to introduce the music they love to someone new.

The result?

Beck’s traffic to his website has increased by 500 percent (via Wall Street Journal) and he’s reaching a whole new category of music lovers by covering some classic Velvet Underground.

The Lesson: You don’t need to record rock hits to give people a whole bunch of reasons to talk — a little at a time. Instead of focusing on that one “home run” whitepaper or yearly report, try creating sustainable word of mouth by starting a newsletter or a blog to regularly share some helpful tips, research, or how-to advice that your fans can use and pass on.
