Great word of mouth marketers are on the lookout for opportunities to surprise and inspire their fans and customers to talk about them. Here are three big opportunities to create word of mouth moments:

1. The point of sale
2. The packaging
3. The pricing

1. The point of sale

The point of sale is a huge opportunity to create word of mouth because every customer experiences it. What are you doing at the register or in your online shopping cart to get people talking? Think about introducing a unique way to place orders, a better use of the receipt, or just something fun and unexpected for the customer.

2. The packaging

Is the packaging your products come in worth talking about? Smart marketers are using clever bags, containers, boxes, and little extras that come with their stuff to inspire people to talk about them. Packaging can be an expensive design feature, but even if your budget is tiny, there’s always room to add a little personality and functionality into yours.

3. The pricing

Pricing is another great touchpoint you can use to get people talking. It costs you nothing to experiment with, and through it you can do some remarkable bundles, great specials, or goofy stunts. For inspiration, check out Threadless’ partnership with UNICEF to create the $300,000 T-shirt.

Packaging was an interesting thing for me, because I recently started talking to people about an ebay seller because of his packaging. I had ordered some things, and they came wrapped in a standard bubble-envelope. But when I opened it, out fell a Little Debbie box with my items in it. I was so amused that I sent pictures to three different people (who are also easily amused) and one of them asked for the full explanation.

Of course, that could just be me and my quirky circle of friends.
